Show Protocols
Given that one of the major functions of CFWRS is creating positive PR images for ferrets and the ferret owning community, we need to be mindful of the following when on show grounds:
1. FIGHTING FERRETS
We understand that unless we integrate new ferrets into existing groups, we are condemning them to solitary and lonely lives. However, this needs careful explanation to the public when there is rough play/dominance behavior and vocalisation from our animals. If a dispute occurs between ferrets, members need to check on the seriousness of the argument and explain the behavior to any public present. If at all possible, ferrets should only be introduced to each other for the first time at the back of the stand.
2. FERRET RACING
We need to explain the following whilst racing is in progress:
- Allowing ferrets to race utilises their natural behaviours;
- We know our animals’ temperaments and we should only race those who we know will enjoy the process.
3. THE PUBLIC FACE OF CFWRS
- We have to be aware of the negative visual effect poorly presented cages can create. Animals must always have sufficient food, water and bedding to ensure their comfort and wellbeing. If possible, a pod or blankets should be provided so that ferrets can get some privacy if they need to. Tidy cages with clean water bottles/bowls should be a minimum standard;
- We should not alienate members of the public by feeding recognisable animals like day old chicks in view of the public, and we should not underestimate the negative effect that the sight of blood and raw flesh can have on some individuals.
4. FERRET/PUBLIC INTERACTION
- Our Public Liability Insurance is invalidated if an incident occurs whilst we have handed ferrets over to the public. Therefore, on no account can ferrets be given to members of the public to hold.
- However, if you have a relaxed and placid ferret who enjoys public interaction, then you can hold the animal while it is stroked by the public. Please remember to offer hand gel, particularly to children, once they have finished.
5. RULES FOR ENTRIES TO SHOWS (30/08/15)
- Veterans will be 6 years old or older.
- Kits will be accepted between 12 weeks and 12 months of age. Ferrets must be 1-year-old or older to be entered in to adult classes.

- Ferrets must have been in the possession of owners for at least 7 days
