Rescue & Rehoming

One of the Society's central functions is to take in abandoned, unwanted or stray ferrets. We do our best not to turn any animals away, but we do have limited space and funds.

Once a ferret is handed in to us, will assess their physical and psychological health and temperament. Any ferrets that come to us as strays will be housed for seven days to give their owner a chance to come forward. After their initial assessment, any necessary medical treatment will be given.

The society will endeavour to neuter as many ferrets as financially possible. All Jills over six months old that come to us in the spring and summer months are housed for up to six weeks to check for a possible pregnancy before neutering.

Once this process is complete and the ferrets are in good health, they will be offered for re-homing. The society recommends that animals live with at least one other of its kind and will only re-home solitary animals in the most exceptional of circumstances.

If you would like to re-home one of our ferrets, we will need to know who will take responsibility for the animal and its care. We will discuss the accommodation you have prepared and whether they will be pets, working animals or both. We will also ask about your experience with ferrets, whether you are a first time owner or have a wealth of experience and knowledge.

Each ferret is unique and it is important to match the ferret/ferrets with their new owner. We rarely re-home a young ferret 'kit' with a first time owner, as they can be more challenging than adult animals which have already learned their manners.

We do offer a pairing service where you can bring your existing ferret to us and we will try to find him or her a friend. Ferrets are emotionally complex and intelligent animals and they will have their own ideas about who they want to live with.

Important note: We do not offer ferrets for breeding, or pair up animals with a non-castrated hob.

Interested in re-homing a ferret?

If you are interested in re-homing a ferret and would like to find out more, please contact our rescue co-ordinator or one of the members below. We will be able to tell you what is currently available. Please see the contact details below.

Also use these numbers if you need advice about your ferrets, have found a stray ferret or can no longer care for the ferrets that you have. We are here to help, not to judge you as a pet owner and will offer help or advice where we can. We cannot guarantee that we will have available space to accommodate the ferret when necessary, but will try our best to help.
